Although results are still unofficial, the county Registrar of Voters Office reports District 2 City Council candidate Lorie Zapf and incumbent District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis appear to have outright won their respective contests in the June 3 primary race.
With all 1,616 precincts tallied, Zapf appears to have beaten opponent Sarah Boot, a federal prosecutor, for the District 2 seat to replace Kevin Faulconer, who was elected mayor in February. The Registrar of Voters Office said there are still 2,000 mail-in and provisional ballots yet to be counted, with certification at least a week or more away.
Contrary to state contests that will necessitate a general election in November between the top two candidates in each race, local elections can be decided at the primary election level if an individual gets at least 50 percent of the vote.
Semi-official results show Zapf with 543 percent voter approval (13,538 votes) to Boot’s 39 percent (9,814 votes). If the count holds up and provisional ballots do not significantly change the outcome, Zapf will represent District 2 as soon as November, displacing interim District 2 City Councilman Ed Harris.
The City Council’s District 2 encompasses Ocean Beach, Point Loma, Pacific Beach, Mission Beach and Mission Bay, among other communities.
In the race for district attorney, it appears incumbent Bonnie Dumanis is headed for a fourth term after trouncing her closest competitor, Bob Brewer.
Semi-official results show Dumanis with 55 percent of the vote (209,370 votes), compared with the tally for Brewer, who garnered 35 percent (132,170 votes)
