Melani Pheasant, a hair stylist at Haute Heads salon, located at 7760 Fay Ave Suite S, had an unusual but heartwarming client experience on Feb. 15. Brandon Hales, a fifth-grader at Dana Elementary School in Point Loma, came to her to have his long, blonde locks cut off to be donated to Locks of Love, a nonprofit that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss. Hales said he got teased and mistaken for a girl for more than a year, so he happily parted with his tresses, which Pheasant tied into braids and snipped off to ship off to the organization. “Some kids have cancer and other people may make fun of them because they don’t have any hair, so I want to help with that,” said Hales, who grew his hair specifically for this cause. Pheasant was recommended to Hales’ mom, Jay Jay, who said she was delighted when the stylist had an opening at her La Jolla shop. “It’s incredible,” said Pheasant of Hales’ persistence in growing his hair longer than 10 inches, the minimum donation length. “We should all be inspired.”
