The Young Audiences of San Diego will host their second annual Summer Salsa fund-raiser Saturday, Aug. 26, at the McMillin Event Center at NTC Promenade Liberty Station.
“The fund-raiser supports all Young Audiences arts education programs: performance programs for school assemblies, classroom workshops, classroom artist residencies and classroom teacher professional development in the arts,” said Executive Director Hilliard Harper.
Summer Salsa is a fun night out for couples and single adults, Harper said. Guests can choose from a buffet array of hors d’oeuvres, learn to salsa during one hour of salsa instruction, dance to a live band, participate in a raffle drawing and bid on a variety of silent auction items.
“We have a huge range of auction items from tickets to sports events, theatres, concerts, dance events and gift certificates to fine restaurants, to the unexpected: lunch with an author, a sailboat cruise around the harbor, a guided bird watching nature walk, a surfing lesson, a hand-crocheted blanket, and a week in a home in Provence, France overlooking the Mediterranean,” added Harper.
Young Audiences is the oldest and largest San Diego nonprofit organization whose sole mission is arts education. The organization encourages students to take part in music, dance, theatre, visual arts, and creative writing.
Now celebrating its 43rd year, Young Audiences collaborates with individual professional performing and visual artists and other arts organizations in order to pass on diverse cultural traditions to succeeding generations of San Diegans and to uplift and inspire young people to achieve their full potential, Harper said.
Young Audiences has and continues to provide schools and community sites with arts assemblies, workshops, and field trips. The organization was established in 1962 and has been providing the community school programs since 1963.
“Last school year our programs served more than 50,000 students in 174 schools and community sites across San Diego County,” Harper said.
All proceeds from the event will pay for Young Audiences’ school programs.
The event begins at 7 p.m. and runs until 10 p.m. Admission is $30 in advance, $35 at the door. For more information, call Young Audiences of San Diego at (619) 282-7599.
