Many people can remember going to their local YMCA as a kid to participate in sporting activities. This summer is no different at the La Jolla YMCA.
Since 1965, the La Jolla YMCA has been building strong kids, strong families, and strong communities in local neighborhoods. Each year the La Jolla YMCA involves more than 27,000 youth and their families, from communities including La Jolla and beyond.
The Y’s summer day camps meet the needs of both parents and kids, offering good fun in good hands. The La Jolla YMCA day camp offers a variety of activities and is running now through Aug. 31.
Vince Glorioso, department head of Sports and Family Programs, said the La Jolla YMCA has been offering day camp for more than 30 years.
“Sports camps have been an integral part of the program since the onset,” Glorioso said.
According to Glorioso, the La Jolla YMCA offers a variety of sports camp opportunities for youths ranging from ages 5 to 15. Each camp is geared toward a different age group based on the complexity of the games and activities.
“Many of our YMCA camp participants are from the La Jolla area,” Glorioso noted. “We also get participants from other communities in our service area, including University City, Clairemont, Sorrento Valley and the Golden Triangle, as well as north Pacific Beach. We offer bus routes to and from select local businesses, allowing us to serve children whose parents work close to our YMCA. During summer, we enroll a diverse population of campers from around the world who are vacationing in La Jolla and the surrounding communities.”
In addition to the Y’s specialty and traditional day camp options, the La Jolla YMCA offers camps for all of the sports that kids enjoy. Activities include baseball, basketball, soccer, volleyball, flag football, golf and tennis. Each camp features instruction and organized game play.
“Some of our newest and most unique sports camps include lacrosse, track and field and ice hockey,” Glorioso said. “A popular program for our younger campers is Sports Galore Camp, which offers a different sport each day for youth ages 5 to 9. We offer three weeks of girls-only sports camps, including basketball, soccer and softball.”
Camps are offered in one-week sessions, and each camp begins on Monday and ends on Friday. They are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with extended care options for both the mornings and afternoons. Many camps are still open for registration.
“Many of our sports camp participants continue their experience at the La Jolla YMCA in other programs and by joining our sports leagues throughout the year,” Glorioso noted. “Our sports leagues include basketball, volleyball and flag football for youth ages 7 to 15. We also offer Pee Wee sports clinics for ages 2 to 6. In addition to organized game-play and instruction, all of our sports programs focus on team-building, development of personal self-esteem and sportsmanship.”
For more information on La Jolla YMCA camps, sports, membership and additional programs, call (858) 453-3483 or visit lajolla.ymca.org. The La Jolla YMCA is located at 8355 Cliffridge Ave.
