YMCA offers new specialty summer camps

With summer kicking off last week, are you left wondering what to do with your kids for the next couple of months?
If so, the La Jolla YMCA has a number of fun options available if your children are into sports.
Sam Spratt, sports director at the La Jolla YMCA, said the Y’s summer sports camps are designed to give campers the opportunity to learn and experience a variety of popular sports each week.
“All of our camps include specialty instruction for beginner to intermediate kids,” Spratt said. “We offer 15 different sports this summer over an 11-week span. Each camp specializes in a specific sport and is one week long, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. We offer traditional sports camps like basketball, football, baseball, soccer, tennis and volleyball. We also offer specialty (non-traditional) sports camps, like bowling, ice hockey, dodge ball, radical sports and rugby.”
Spratt said that this year, the Y is concentrating on providing specialized instruction in their camps.
“We have the help from several vendors and sports organizations that are teaming up with us this summer to help improve the quality of our instruction,” he said. “For example, organizations like USA Sevens Rugby, San Diego Mavericks Baseball, Soccertron and members of the San Diego Wildcats ABA basketball team will be helping us with instruction this summer. We especially want to emphasize rugby, radical sports (kick boxing, rock climbing, laser tag, boogie boarding, kayaking) and dodge ball as camps that are new this summer and will be a lot of fun.”
Just how many kids will descend on the La Jolla YMCA for sports camps this summer According to Spratt, the Y will have about 150 campers on an average week.
“We have kids from all over San Diego and all over the country visit our camps throughout the summer,” Spratt said. “We absolutely welcome non-members. That is one great thing about our summer camps, the diversity among campers. It’s for everybody.”
The camps are all co-ed and range from 5 to 12 years old. It is also a great place to meet new friends, according to Spratt.
For further information, parents can register their children online at www.lajolla.ymca.org or in person at the YMCA, 8355 Cliffridge Drive.
