Winter sports season opens for Mission Bay teams

With Thanksgiving in the rear-view mirror, a number of Mission Bay teams are focused on the winter sports season. Girls water polo
The girls water polo team will kick off its season Friday, Nov. 30 with a match against Clairemont High on the road.
According to head coach Lyndsay Sutterley, the Bucs will look to senior Izana Hypse and junior Piper McCarty to lead the way this season.
“We are looking forward to developing and growing as a young team,” Sutterley commented. “I am excited to see the progress that the girls make during the season.
“We have some excellent upperclassmen that have really stepped into a leadership role with some of our younger players. Hopefully this environment will help lead to a successful season.” Boys soccer The Bucs, under head coach Joe Panian, were to open the season Nov. 27 against Hoover High.
According to Panian, some of the key players to watch this season will include senior midfielder Enrique Moreno (“pulls the strings and anchors the midfield”), senior defender Victor Leyva (“leader of the team verbally and through his actions), and junior midfielder Anthony Munoz (“the engine of the team as well as a prolific goal scorer”).
Panian went on to say that “this is a talented group that should compete for top spot of our league as well as go deep into playoffs. We have a good group of guys this year that have been a great pleasure to work with and I am looking forward to the season to see what kind of impact they can make.” Girls soccer
The Bucs open their home season against Castle Park High on Nov. 30.
According to head coach Jorge Palacios, Mission Bay (Eastern League Division II) will have a nice mix of experience and youth. This will include Ryana Bueno (senior midfielder), Juliette Tran (junior forward), Amanda Witkowski (sophomore midfielder), and Camrin Peaslee (freshman forward).
“We’re looking forward to the season as we have a number of tough matchups that should be fun and challenging,” Palacios stated. “This group works really hard in training and with only two returning seniors, still has lots of room to grow.”
