It’s nothing new to see college students always looking for a way to make a little extra spending money by doing a variety of odd jobs between classes.
But then there’s Gerardo Sandoval, a junior at Point Loma of Nazarene University.
He has taken that quest to new heights by creating his own painting business and contracting college students as his crew.
“I was searching jobs sites on my computer when I came across Tuition Payments, which is a nationwide company that provides college students with an internship where they run their own branch of a program called Tuition Painters in their home town,” Sandoval said. “I applied and received a franchise for all of San Diego. I do my own marketing, my own hiring and my own production; I’m in charge of it all.”
Sandoval’s enterprise offers college students a nice chunk of change for their efforts in addition to getting free instruction on how to paint and prep a house from some of the best in the business.
“Painters make $8 to $9 per hour plus they get a fifty-cent per hour bonus if they stay on for the entire summer,” said Sandoval.
Part of the Tuition Painters program includes free training by the experts from the well-known Serwin-Williams brand. Before the first brush is dipped into a can of paint, the experts come in and personally instruct the novice painters on the proper procedures on how to prep and paint a house.
“Yesterday the Sherwin-Williams people came in and explained to us all the requirements that must be followed before we start any painting,” Sandoval said.
Teams are taught how to scrape, sand, caulk, as well as how to properly apply the paint. The painters are also showed how to use modern painting equipment and techniques.
“It’s a very comprehensive course,” Sandoval said.
Sandoval recruited a handful of friends for his new venture, but said he will be adding new painters for the summer.
“Right now I have three painters from my school who are also friends of mine and another two that go to Mesa College and my brother who is a graduating high school senior and will be going to Point Loma next year,” Sandoval said.
The PLNU junior has also been marketing in the Claremont area by going door-to-door asking homeowners if they would like a free estimate for any painting needs they might have.
Sandoval’s work paid off with his first two jobs as he gears up for a busy summer. All new staff members must be college students.
