Rip currents and higher-than-normal surf are expected along the San Diego County coast today, Aug. 21, with waves up to seven feet through the weekend.
A swell out of the south headed toward Southern California prompted the National Weather Service (NWS) to issue a beach advisory, which is scheduled to extend until Sunday afternoon. The swell will generate elevated surf along San Diego County and Orange County beaches through the weekend, with isolated sets to seven feet possible on southerly facing beaches, according to NWS. Strong and dangerous rip currents are reportedly likely through the period as well.
Water temperatures in the surf line will be 67 to 73 degrees. The currents could cause dangerous swimming conditions, the NWS warned. Beachgoers were advised to obey posted signs and to swim near a lifeguard.
