I hope you can soon publish an update to Point Loma residents on what the city is doing at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park.
I have read the master plan, which calls for the removal of (all) nonnative trees. In fact, I just downloaded it again recently.
But I, like many, expected a gradual process of removal. When they started cutting the eucalyptus trees a few weeks ago, we were told they were removing the dead trees, of which there are many in this drought time.
Now, they (private contractors) are hard at it and have cut down one entire stand which fronted everyone’s walk into the area. As I type, they are shredding into chips the remains of an old stand which has been there more than my 50-plus years.
Perhaps I mistakenly thought that the city’s financial woes would further postpone the tree removals, the field removal, et cetera.
There is tons of old construction debris buried under and around the field that city planners I talked to were completely unaware of. Part of this is from the old Cal Western dump site, where they burned their trash 40-plus years ago.
My biggest concern is a haphazard attempt to move on their master plan by simply demolishing all the trails and stands of trees en masse throughout the park area and only then replant new trees.
This is still designated as a natural park. No one around here wants multi-use parking, permanent restrooms, et cetera.
How they can proceed with this when we cannot even get damaging potholes repaired ” as well as other needed infrastructure attention ” is beyond me.
I hope you can send someone out there to document what is happening and hopefully report it to our community since you are our only community newspaper.
Any and all attention you give to this will be greatly appreciated by many.
