Both the La Jolla High and Bishop’s School boys volleyball teams have been hoping that they saved their best play for the end of the season as the CIF playoffs begin.
At La Jolla High, head coach Dave Jones and the Vikings sported an overall mark as of last week of 13-16, 6-6 in league play. The Vikings ended last week ranked number one in Division III and earned a bye in this week’s first round of CIF playoffs.
After a tough loss to third-ranked Scripps Ranch last Tuesday, the Vikings were able to bounce back last Thursday and sweep Cathedral in three games (25-21, 25-16, 25-20).
Matt Jones led the attack with nine kills, while Kenny Sawyer and Tyler Heap each added another seven kills apiece. Tyler’s older brother Andrew led the Vikings with 25 assists and seven stuff blocks, while Sawyer added another five blocks of his own.
At The Bishop’s School, the Knights last week celebrated Senior Night in honoring Chandler Frost, Sam Gold and Wheeler Hadden.
Bishop’s then went out and played its best match of the year, defeating Canyon Crest 25-21, 25-15 and 25-19.
Wheeler led the Knights with 14 kills and five aces. Chandler tallied 29 assists, while Gold had two aces and six digs.
Bishop’s finished the regular season at 14-9 and entered the CIF playoffs this past Tuesday evening (May 15) with the eighth seed in Division IV, where it was to meet Madison.
