The La Jolla High boys’ basketball team remained unbeaten in Western League play last Friday with its 60-40 victory over neighboring University City High.
La Jolla (11-5, 3-0) also scored a 56-53 victory over Cathedral Catholic to begin the week.
Peter Sefton led the Vikings in the victory over Cathedral with 20 points and nine rebounds. Spencer Moyer had 13 points and seven assists, and Jerrell Agnew contributed 12 points and four steals.
Matt Jones led the way three days later in the win over University City with 20 points, six rebounds, four blocked shots and three assists. Moyer had 14 points and five assists and Agnew 15 points and four assists.
“We are having our best season in my four years as coach at La Jolla High,” La Jolla High head coach Kamal Assaf noted. “We are a legitimate contender in both Western League and Division III CIF and have some excellent non-league preseason wins against strong teams.”
In the win over University City, Assaf said the best part of that night was the fact that the Vikings had 20 assists against a talented team.
“In addition to that, the team did a great job of working together defensively to cover for each other, and we held a strong offensive team to 40 points for the evening,” Assaf added.
The Bishop’s School raised its record to 12-5 with its 52-49 win over Francis Parker last Friday evening.
Jywrell Wilson paced the Knights with 16 points, with Malik Love and Corey Malkiewicz adding 12 and 10 points, respectively.
La Jolla Country Day School dropped its eighth straight game with a 54-51 loss to Santa Fe Christian last Tuesday. Jvonte Brooks led the Torreys with 23 points.
On the girls side, La Jolla Country Day School raised its record to 12-3 with its 63-32 win over Canyon Crest Academy last Friday.
The Lady Torreys placed three players in double figures, with Dominique Conners notching 19 points. Janae Fulcher added 18 and Ariana Elegado chipped in with 11.
La Jolla High saw its overall record fall to 4-11 (1-2 Western League) with a pair of losses to Cathedral (72-32) and University City (44-37) last week.
Olivia Waldon led La Jolla in the loss to Cathedral with 16 points, while Sandra Harpster notched 10 in the loss to UC.
The Bishop’s School saw its record drop to 12-4 last Friday with a 57-55 loss to league rival Francis Parker.
Gizelle Studevant led Bishop’s with 16 points, with Elaina White and Alissa Campanero adding 11 and 10 points, respectively.
