Golf team members include: Ash Clarence, Jacob Tapia, Sean Nguyen, Justin Anderson, Nathan Stepanski, Cole Doolittle, and Dylan Hale. Standley Park gets improvements approval
On May 18, the San Diego Parks and Recreation Board unanimously approved the Standley Middle School and Spreckels Elementary School joint use and aquatic facility general development plan amendment projects. Dr. John Lee Evans, Board of Education member and chair of the Imagine UC 2020 Committee, outlined the issues under consideration, which includes a new initiative put forth by Mayor Faulconer and San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Cindy Marten called the Play All Day Parks program. SDUSD will help fund the capital projects and the city will underwrite the operational costs. Many of the proposals were suggested by community members, including a community stage pavilion, Swanson Pool updates, and park jogging path. Both the schools and community will benefit, as the stage pavilion will be used for student events, summer concerts, UC Celebration, and Oktoberfest. The new pool will be used for UCHS water polo and swim teams, and the jogging path will improve the overall health of UC residents. For more information, visit www.ImproveUC.org.
Good Deeds: Students ‘come together’
Spreckels Elementary students volunteered at I Love A Clean San Diego’s Kids’ Ocean Day on May 18, helping pick up trash on Mission Beach. Afterward, the students created the living art “come together” piece on South Mission Beach. The Kids’ Ocean Day included students from other Title I schools. The students truly did embody the spirit of the message, as they came together to help clean local beaches. Well done to all participants. For more information, visit www.CleanSD.org.
