University City Summer Movies in the Park 

Free family movies are scheduled this summer at University City area parks including Doyle, Nobel, Standley, Villa La Jolla, and University Village. Summer Movies in the Park are a perfect chance for the whole family to relax with family and friends to enjoy a safe and special night under the stars. Movies begin at dusk. Bring a blanket, chairs, and a picnic snack. Come early to enjoy the park and get a good seat.  

  • Friday, Aug. 9, Nobel Park, 8810 Judicial Drive: “How to Train Your Dragon 3” 
  • Saturday, Aug. 10, University Village Park, 7100 Florey St.: “Incredibles 2″ 
  • Saturday, Aug. 16, Doyle Park, 8175 Regents Road: “Jungle Book” 
  • Saturday, Sept. 7, Standley Park, 3585 Governor Drive: “Ralph Wrecks the Internet” 
  • Friday, Oct. 4, Doyle Park, 8175 Regents Road: “Casper”

UC Del Sol’s girls softball begins 

The fall season for UC Del Sol’s girls softball is almost upon us and now is the time to sign up! Early bird registration ends Aug. 15, so if your daughter wants to get started, sign up now at ucdelsol.com. Early bird registration is only $125; after Aug. 15, the fee goes up to $140. The registration fee includes a jersey and socks, weekly practices (at Standley Middle School) and weekend games against local leagues through November. This season, UC Del Sol will also pay half the cost of individual skill weekly lessons. UC Del Sol is part of USA Softball, the same governing body of the U.S. Olympic team and world tournament teams. By playing in UC Del Sol, your daughter is technically part of the U.S. Olympic program! 

Artisans wanted  

Curie Elementary is looking for artisans to sell their unique handmade items at their annual holiday craft fair to be held on Saturday, Nov. 2.?The fair features more than 100 vendors displaying handmade goods. The Curie Craft Fair has been a longtime tradition in the University City community and looks to feature local artisans. Doyle Elementary seeks reading tutors 

The school year is upon us soon, and once again, local schools are calling for volunteers wanting to make a difference in the life of a child in University City. Doyle Elementary is seeking reading tutors for the 2019-2020 school year. Tutors will read with students who have been identified by their teachers as needing help. Training is available through San Diego County Office of Education at community sites or at the Doyle school. The tutoring commitment is about two hours, one morning a week (Tuesday or Thursday) during the school day, September through May. Materials are provided and you’ll be working with the same students each week. Tutors substitute for one another for appointments, traveling and unexpected events. Doyle Elementary School is located at 3950 Berino Court. 

Summer concerts in Standley Park 

The 2019 Summer Concert Series continues through the remainder of August, featuring a variety of musical styles. All concerts are at Standley Park, 3585 Governor Drive, and are scheduled for Sunday evenings, from 5-7 p.m. Bring a lawn chair or blanket, snacks and drinks, and enjoy a lovely evening with friends, family and neighbors in University City. Arrive early to pick out a favorite spot in the shade. Don’t forget your dancing shoes! The remaining schedule is:  

  • Aug. 11 – Full Strength Funk Band – funk, R&B, soul  
  • Aug. 18 – Y3K – modern variety rock band 
  • Aug. 25 – Forecast – A wide variety of jazz styles from funk to swing to bossa nova
