Taste of the Triangle
EdUCate’s 25th anniversary celebration at the Taste of the Triangle on May 3 was a vibrant and mouthwatering affair held at Pirch Westfield UTC. The venue was the perfect setting for 16 local restaurants, as each showcased their tastes in each of Pirch’s display kitchens. Guests, including San Diego Unified School District Supervisor Cindy Marten, board member John Lee Evans, local school principals, and many school teachers, enjoyed the tastes, music, silent auction and overall relaxing evening with the community. Along with the VIP reception, the Taste of the Triangle was able to raise more than $41,000 toward supporting University of California area public schools. The annual fundraiser is helping EdUCate make its goal of raising $2 million by 2020. To learn more about EdUCate, go to uc-educate.org. Community Plan Update
The University City Planning Group is currently hosting Community Plan Update Subcommittee meetings to help city planners update the current plan, which was last adopted in 1987. The plan update process is expected to be completed by 2021. The meetings are open to the public and their comments. Recent public comments have included MCAS Miramar flight operations, land use, building height limits, and segregated bike lanes. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 21, at Scripps Campus Point C Building, Conference Rooms A & B, First Floor, 10010 Campus Point Drive. For more information, go to sandiego.gov/planning/community/cpu/university. Doyle Elementary International Festival
On Friday, May 31, Doyle Elementary School will host their 24th annual International Festival from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Join the festivities on the school’s grass field and the blacktop for multicultural performances and booths representing a variety of countries. This exciting event is free to the public. Food trucks will be available for purchasing dinner and dessert. Attention shoppers: The annual neighborhood clean-up event, sponsored by Coldwell Banker University City, returns on Saturday, June 1, from 8 a.m to noon. Signs, advertising and maps will be provided, free of charge. The deadline to have your home listed on the map is May 29. Maps and addresses will be available at Coldwell Banker in the Vons shopping center starting at 7 a.m. on June 1. Contact Coldwell Banker to include your home in this huge University City event at 858-352-6587 or email [email protected]. This is the best day of the year to go shopping in University City. You will find a huge variety of things at wonderful prices. Brown Bag Opera
Our Mother of Confidence Catholic Church will be presenting the next Brown Bag Opera on Sunday, May 19, starting at 1 p.m. This month’s opera is that of “Rodelinda,” one of Handel’s greatest dramas, seen in Stephen Wadsworth’s 2004 Metropolitan Opera premiere production. Rodelinda is faced with an impossible dilemma: With her husband Bertarido believed dead, she either has to marry the despised Grimoaldo (the elegant Joseph Kaiser), who has usurped her husband’s throne, or see him murder her son. For more information, visit omcsandiego.org.
But Bertarido (leading countertenor Andreas Scholl) is alive and eventually reclaims both throne and wife — and makes peace with his enemies. Bring your own lunch to this free event at OMC, 3131 Governor Drive. Info at: omcsandiego.org
