10th anniversary of F-18 jet crash remembrance
Dec. 8 is the 10th anniversary of the F-18 fighter jet crash in University City that killed four members of the same family, destroyed two homes, damaged several others, and caused multiple fires. In remembrance of the crash, neighbors will gather at a local park to share memories, for a moment of silence and to dedicate four trees to be planted as a living memorial to those who lost their lives. The memorial and tree dedication is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 8, at 11:30 a.m., at University Village Park (the Tot Lot park), at 7100 Florey St., located at the intersection of Gullstrand/Cather and Florey.
The public is welcome to join with neighbors and friends to connect with each other to remember the crash and its aftermath. Sponsors hope that by dedicating four newly planted trees as a living memorial to the four neighbors who died in the crash, the long process of healing will continue. Those who are not able to attend are urged to set their alarms to 11:58 a.m. on Dec. 8 as a reminder to participate in a moment of silence and to remember all those affected by the crash. For more info, visit UniversityCityNews.org. Free trees planted November was a busy month for the Trees 1000 Foundation and the Davey Resource Group. Davey has already planted more than 100 trees on private properties throughout University City at the request of Trees 1000. This is in keeping with the foundation’s mission to re-building the tree canopy lost to recent construction projects, improving air quality and reducing the heat factor. Jessica Groat, a homeowner on Whipple Avenue (pictured), was a recent recipient of a redbud tree funded through Trees 1000. For more info, visit trees1000.org. EdUCate! awards 22K in teacher grants
EdUCate’s fall grant cycle was a huge success, as it was the first time that 100 percent of all UC teachers or counselors who submitted a grant application were awarded a grant. EduCate! Foundation for UC Public Schools awarded $22,000 in grant monies to fund items for the five University City schools. Items ranging from STEM and robotics (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) project materials to give students hands on experience in their classrooms, to classroom rugs, calculators, speakers and headphones. Awards were also granted for books to help expand teachers’ classroom libraries and school libraries, as well as laminated posters and recycle bins to promote environmentally conscious students and campuses. The foundation is supplementing the publishing cost of school newspapers, marching band instruments, and classroom items like fidget toys and stools for young students who need support to remain focused in class. EdUCate! has a long history of awarding grants that are practical, innovative, cost effective, use collaboration among teachers, classrooms, and grades, and have a high impact on our students.
