On May 11 at 6:24 a.m., a 44-year-old male was struck from behind by a vehicle driven while riding his bicycle northbound on 6500 La Jolla Colony Drive. After the collision, the 29-year-old driver of the vehicle, Heejoon Lee, fled in the vehicle as police arrived on scene. While fleeing, Lee was involved in another collision at 7600 Palmilla Drive and was taken into custody by San Diego Police officers. Lee was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and placed under arrest.

Lee was booked into jail for DUI and hit-and-run, both felony offenses, on May 11 at 10:58 a.m.
