As kids growing up near the southern coast of Maine, the Cesare brothers ” John, Mike and Dan ” spent their childhood exploring the ocean looking for sea creatures and other underwater treasures, using straws as snorkels and pretending that empty two-liter soda bottles were scuba tanks.
Since they were young, the three had their life planned out: They would move to an island and continue their underwater adventures, and 20 years later, John, Mike and Dan live on Maui, started their own business, C3 Submerged, working as underwater photographers and leading dive tours of an underwater paradise and capturing images of the colorful creatures they find.
Café 976 is hosting an exhibit of the brothers’ underwater photography of Indonesia’s and Hawaii’s underwater seascapes.
Café 976 owner Anne Dierickx met the brothers on a dive trip to Maui and is proud to host their premiere mainland show.
“They’ve spent their life underwater,” Deierckx said. “All three are 100-ton boat captains. They’ve had thousands of hours underwater.”
The exhibit will feature 15 large framed images of sea turtles, giant rays, humpback whales, colorful fish and strange seahorses.
“One of the photos, titled ‘Seabiscuit,’ is a shot of a pygmy seahorse, which is basically the size of a grain of rice,” he said.
The café is hosting an opening reception Friday, April 25, from 6 to 9 p.m., featuring live music by Alchemistas, hors d’oeuvres and beverages and an appearance by John and Mike to discuss their photography and swap dive stories.
Space is limited and RSVPs are recommended.
Email [email protected] to RSVP.
The images will be on display at Café 976 through May 31 and the show ends with a closing reception.

Café 976 is located at 976 Felspar St.
