The San Diego Strikers look to continue with their impressive play so far this season as they take on Breakaway SC at 6 p.m. Sunday, June 5 at Mission Bay High School.
The Strikers have been dominant over the first two regular-season matches outscoring their opponents by a combined 7-1 with five of those goals coming from forward Kiera Bocchino, who is tied for second place in scoring and only one behind Caroline Kelly of Kansas City Current II.
Breakaway SC played only one match this season losing 1-0 to So Cal Union FC on Wednesday on the road. The Strikers dominated both matches against Breakaway SC last year outscoring them a combined 9-1 on their way to the Plymouth Division title in the team’s inaugural season as a member of the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL).
“Our team has a lot of depth and very talented players who can compete with anyone,” said Strikers head coach Ray Taila. “As long as we continue being consistent throughout the match, I feel that we should always expect a good result.”
Taila was at the helm last season when the Strikers won the division by going 6-0-0 but did not get a chance to compete for the WPSL championship once the league announced it was canceling postseason play due to the ongoing COVID pandemic.
Among the players that the Strikers will need to keep a close eye on for Saturday’s match is midfielder Lexi Gentry who lead Breakaway SC in scoring in 2021. The San Diego native and Mt. Carmel High School product also made 14 starts for Maryville University leading the Saints with 39 shot attempts and 20 shots on goal last fall.
