La Mesa-based United Karate Federation will be celebrating half a century of martial arts tradition at its sold-out 50th anniversary gala on Saturday, Aug. 27, at Bethel Baptist Church, beginning at 2 p.m. The event will highlight and celebrate UKF’s rich 50-year history.
The gala will recognize and honor UKF Founder and Head Instructor- Orned “Chicken” Gabriel, his Mother – the late Billie Nelson (Mother of the UKF), the late Steve “Nasty” Anderson, and other UKF students. Also being recognized is Chicken’s senior instructor, the late Grandmaster Richard (Dick) Willett. The evening will include an awards and belt promotion ceremony.
Guests will be treated to a gourmet dinner and a day of entertainment. Live music will be performed by renowned harpist, Mariea Antoinette, vocalist Judith Malone, and The Men for Christ singing group. Martial arts demonstrations will be performed by UKF students and other martial artists from other styles, like Eric Lee – “The King of Kata.” The gala will be capped off by speeches from UKF founders and leaders highlighting UKF’s history, vision, and future mission of providing value to San Diego and its surrounding communities.
