
TwainFest – the annual free celebration of Mark Twain and his contemporaries in 19th century America – comes to life for the sixth year on Saturday, Aug. 15, at the Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. Action runs from 11a.m. To 5 p.m.
With dozens of actors, musicians, and dancers, TwainFest is a celebration of 19th century American literature, music, and culture.
Highlights of TwainFest 2016 include:
COSTUME CONTEST – come as the 19th century fictional character of your choice. Join the parade and compete on the mainstage.
LIARS CONTEST – tall tales extraordinaire. Coordinated by the San Diego Storytellers. Have a big fib to tell? Join us here.
TREASURE HUNT – follow the map to treasure – and a prize.
WHEEL OF FICTION – Wheel of Fortune takes a spin through literature!
CIVIL WAR FIELD HOSPITAL – an historic re-enactment includes battlefield surgery right before your eyes!
SPELLING BEE – all 19th century words, however!
LIVE MUSIC – Celtic Echoes, Westward Ho, Red River Valley, and the Huckleberries!
ACTORS and DANCERS – reading and performing scenes from Twain, Thoreau, Poe, Carroll and many more great writers.
TEATRO MASCARA MAGICA performs “The Bells of Dona Josefa”
STORIES READ ALOUD – in Spanish as well as English.
VOTE for GARFIELD or GRANT in the Election of 1872 – if you can register, that is!
PLAY CROQUET – with the Red Queen of Through the Looking Glass!
FREE BOOKS – for everybody who participate in TwainFest, accumulating at least 5 “participation tickets.” LAUNCH A FROG! How far can you propel a bean bag froggie with our custom catapult?
