As early as next week, new construction activities will begin along Genesee Avenue to facilitate construction of the Mid-Coast Trolley extension, requiring intermittent closures of sections of the thoroughfare.
In early February 2017, crews will widen Genesee Avenue, from Regents Road to La Jolla Village Drive. This work includes barrier installation, road re-striping, median and sidewalk demolition, and preparation to construct a viaduct — the bridge structure that will carry the Trolley down the middle of Genesee Avenue. Lane closures and shifts will be ongoing as this work progresses.
Upcoming work in the area also will include the following:
– On Friday, Feb. 10, through Monday, Feb. 13, Genesee Avenue, from La Jolla Village Drive to Nobel Drive will be closed while crews connect water and sewer systems. This will be a full road closure.
– During one weekend in late February or early March (the exact date has not yet been determined), crews will demolish and remove the pedestrian bridge at Executive Square and Genesee Avenue. This work will require a full closure of Genesee Avenue from La Jolla Village Drive to Eastgate Mall.
– The bridge will be replaced with a new pedestrian crossing signal on the level of the roadway. (This pedestrian bridge removal is necessary in order to make way for the future Executive Drive trolley station in approximately the same location.)
– Work hours are generally Monday through Thursday, from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. Some traffic controls will remain in place 24 hours a day. Once complete, the Mid-Coast Trolley project will extend service from Old Town to the University City community, serving the VA Medical Center, UC San Diego, and the busy commercial and residential districts along Genesee Avenue. Major construction work began in 2016, with service expected to start in 2021.
