The local scholastic track and field season saw some personal best times in recent efforts.
At La Jolla High, the Lady Vikings gave a valiant effort in an 84.5-51.5 loss last week to Cathedral Catholic.
Those that had personal records for La Jolla included Nicole Bakke in the 400 (1:01.40); Nihal Kayali (2:17.37), Tess Plant-Thomas (2:17.47), Christie Richmond (2:33.23), Erica Trimble (2:34.71) and Natalie Russell (2:36.24) in the 800; Zoe Wesco (13:52.32) in the 3200; Gina Schumacher (49.12), Marina Mautner (54.33) and Shelby Rustin (54.71) in the 300 hurdles; Sasha Altschuler (14’4.5″) in the long jump; Ashley Fu (30’7″) and Allison Herman (27’5.25″) in the triple jump; Kaitlin Denison (4’6″) in the high jump; and Sayuri Takagawa (75’10”) and Christina Rho (73’10”) in the discus.
At the frosh/soph championships last weekend, Heather Martin won her division in the freshman triple jump, equaling her best of 32’9″. Rosie Jaye had a personal best in the sophomore pole vault at 9’1″.
At The Bishop’s School, the Knights swept a meet with Horizon last Saturday. The Lady Knights remain unbeaten following a 103-21 victory, while the boys held off Horizon 64-58.
Many of Saturday’s performances were personal bests and top marks in the Coastal Conference.
Sprinters Saron Hood and Alfredo Corral ran personal bests in both of their individual events. Hood clocked 11.34 and 22.74 in the 100 and 200m, respectively, while Corral ran the 200 and the 400m in times of 23.34 and 51.54, respectively. Nathan Hickman also had a personal best in the 400m with a time of 55.04.
Freshman John Carlyle clocked his best times in the 100 and 200.
Sam Fiske threw personal records in both the discus and the shot of 96’1.5″ and 40’3.5″, respectively.
Freshman Ben Sobel threw a personal best in the discus with a throw of 90’3″, while Jose Torres-Torija had a PR in the 300 intermediate hurdles of 49.84, despite a confused late start. Chris Kuntz ran a strong 1600 at 5:14, and Jack Sailor and Jack Weller ran season bests in the 1600 with times of 5:44 and 5:45, respectively.
Despite the heat, Andy Morgosh ran his fastest 3200 of the season in 11:11.
On the girls’ side, freshman Alissa Campanero ran her first open 400m in an impressive 60.84, just shy of the school record of 60.35. Monica Reyna set a PR in the 200m, while Frances Harvey ran best performances in both sets of hurdles and now holds the top spot in conference in both events, with times of 18.14 and 52.54, respectively.
Serena Glynn ran a PR in the 400m (65.64) and ran the 300 intermediate hurdles for the first time in an impressive 55.14. Harvey, Glynn and Madison Maxey are powerhouses in the conference in this event, while the 4×100 and 4×400 relays lead the conference.
Lauren Collins and Naomi Wagner had PRs in the 1600 with times of 5:48 and 5:50, respectively. LaTreace Johnson performed well with a throw of 112’8.5″ in the discus, setting a new school record once again. Throwers Taylor Maxey and Julie Gantz had strong showings as well.
According to Bishop’s coach Steve Mediano, who directs the throwers on the squad, Johnson is the most determined and focused female he has ever coached at the school.
“I have waited a long time for this opportunity for a female to come from our school and start thinking of throwing as seriously as I am coaching it,” Mediano said.
Mediano added that there is still improvement for Johnson and beginner’s flaws to correct, but she is a good listener and takes advice well.
“This season will not only be fun but a lifetime memory for her while being at this school,” Mediano noted.
In the girls jumps, Amy Hoagland and Alyssa Morgosh both set personal bests with leaps of 28’8.5″ and 27’2.5″, respectively. Freshmen Danielle Polikoff, Mary Arbor, Caileigh Gallahue and Taylor Waltz all jumped for PRs in the long jump, and Polikoff, Arbor and Waltz also got PRs in the triple jump.
First-time jumper Angela Schopke won the long jump with a leap of 12’10.5″.
At La Jolla Country Day School, the boys team sports a 7-0 record heading into action this week.
The Torreys have fielded a strong distance team, which was led by Alex Poyhonen in the 1500 at the UCSD Invitational.
At the frosh/soph championships, Dennis Roth placed fourth and third in the 800 and 1600, Lee Klitzner placed eighth and Junior Togiaso won the discus and was second in the shotput.
Also doing well to date have been Andy Altman, Steven Fackler, Jason McCallum, Ryan French, Mitch Amelio, Phillip Poyhonen, Sage Hagstrom, Mike Salas, Bruno Garcia, Jason McCallum, Montell Allen, Mason Boxer-Capitano, Ryan Wyatt and Alex Fleischhacker.
On the girls side, LJCD is 1-6 but has received some good performances this season.
Top performers have included Tricia Decker (vaulting 9-0, long jump, 100, 200), Kira Mesman-Hallman (tied the school triple jump record 32-3), Courtney Rockwood, Alexis Samuels, Jewels Johnson, Tiffany Hoffman, Mollie Rogers, Erika Shepard and Shayla Dinwiddie.
