Since its launch in 2000, Wildcoast has been dedicated to protecting ecologically significant coastal wildlands, islands and marine areas in California and Baja California. “San Diego County has 10 marine protected areas, and half of those are in La Jolla,” said McCue. “It has been shown that marine protected areas can be a huge asset for local communities.” In addition to restoring marine abundance, McCue said when the population thrives, it naturally spills over into open fishing areas, giving communities a bigger return on investment. “The most effective marine protected areas are those supported by their local communities,” he said, urging La Jollans to take part in Wildcoast’s implementation collaborative to offer their input on how their MPAs are protected.
