• In LJTC’s officer elections, Cindy Greatrex was named president, Nancy Gardner as first vice president, Steve Haskins as second vice president, Charles Hartford as secretary and Yolanda de Riquer as treasurer. • The Town Council’s upcoming Dancing with La Jolla Stars will take place on Oct. 5 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Torrey Pines Hilton. Celebrity dance judge Mary Murphy will emcee the event. The next Dancing with La Jolla Stars Committee meeting will take place at Hennessey’s on May 6 at 5 p.m. • Construction of the La Jolla Shores lifeguard tower is in its final stretch, and lifeguards are expected to move in by May, announced District 1 City Councilwoman Sherri Lightner representative Erin Demorest. • Wildcoast conservation director Ben McCue introduced his organization to the La Jolla Town Council on April 11, highlighting the work the organization does in protecting California and Mexico’s network of marine protected areas (MPAs) along the Pacific coastline. Since its launch in 2000, Wildcoast has been dedicated to protecting ecologically significant coastal wildlands, islands and marine areas in California and Baja California. “San Diego County has 10 marine protected areas, and half of those are in La Jolla,” said McCue. “It has been shown that marine protected areas can be a huge asset for local communities.” In addition to restoring marine abundance, McCue said when the population thrives, it naturally spills over into open fishing areas, giving communities a bigger return on investment. “The most effective marine protected areas are those supported by their local communities,” he said, urging La Jollans to take part in Wildcoast’s implementation collaborative to offer their input on how their MPAs are protected.
