League and CIF titles have been on the lines the last couple of weeks as the scholastic track and field season winds down.
In action last Saturday, the La Jolla High girls team went into the CIF Prelims with 20 entries and came out with 10 entries qualifying for CIF Finals, with action in the A and B heats. The A heats can qualify for state and B heats qualify only for the Division I or Division II CIF Championships.
Kiley Henry qualified for sixth place in the 100 for the B heat in 12.72; Tess Plant-Thomas was second in Division II and is qualified eighth for the A heat in 2:20.93, while Jessie Armstrong is qualified fifth for the B heat in a personal record of 2:23.51 in the 800; Nihal Kayali was second in Division II and is qualified ninth for the A heat in 5:14.10 in the 1600, while Gina Schumacher qualified ninth for the B heat in 49.23.
Also, the 4 x 400 relay of Kayali, Nicole Bakke, Christie Richmond and Plant-Thomas qualified first for the B heat in 4:04.52; Melia Plotkin qualified eighth for the A heat, Rosie Jaye qualified fifth in the B heat and Lauren Shwisberg qualified ninth in the B heat in the pole vault; Heather Martin qualified eighth for the B heat in a personal record of 32′ 10″ in the triple jump.
In action a week earlier at the Western League Finals, La Jolla had a number of strong performances.
Kayali broke her own school record in the 1600; Bakke had a personal record in the 400 (1:00.94); and Schumacher had a PR in the 300 hurdles.
The other qualifiers were: Denise Bauman in the 4×100 relay, Callan Parra in the 4×100 and the 200, Schumacher in the 4×100 and 30 hurdles, Henry in the 4×100, 100 and 200; Kayali in the 1600 and 4×400 relay, Maegan Bautista in the 3200, Meghan Forrey in the 100 hurdles; Bakke in the 400 and 4×400 relay, Plant-Thomas in the 800 and 4×400 relay; Armstrong in the 800; Richmond in the 4×400 relay; Allyn Meyer and Martin in the triple jump; Breanna Gomes and Kaitlin Denison in the high jump; Plotkin, Jaye and Shwisberg in the pole vault; and Rachael Melby in the discus.
On the boys side, La Jolla got a number of top performances in last weekend’s prelims.
They included: (Jerrell Agnew, Dylan Cox, Nick Christenson, John Jackson) 4x100m – 44.52; (Agnew) 100m – 11.20; (Angel Mendoza) 800m – 2:03.37; (Kevin Miller, Aru Gonzalez, Mendoza, Jackson) 4×400 -3:29.04; (Miller) high jump – 6’2; (Jose Aviles) shotput – 50’9; and (Nick Hanoian) pole vault – 12’10.
Hanoian’s performance in the pole vault, and that of Agnew in the 100 and the 4x400m team, were season’s bests.
At La Jolla Country Day School, the Torreys furnished some top times at last weekend’s prelims.
Senior Andy Altman broke the school record in the discus (154-1) to advance to the A flight for CIF Finals.
Junior Patricia Decker advances to the CIF Finals in the pole vault, junior Alex Poyhonen in the 1600m and 3200m, sophomore Dennis Roth in the 1600m, and sophomore Jason McCallum in the pole vault and long jump.
