Thunderbirds take to the skies for air show

The Marine Corps Air Station Miramar’s annual air show returns this weekend with a bit of a change for thrill-seekers. Unlike in previous years, when the Navy’s elite Blue Angels wowed audiences, this year’s show will feature the Blue Angel’s talented Air Force counterparts, the Thunderbirds.
“Thunderbirds Over Miramar “” The Sound of Freedom” runs from Friday, Oct. 12 through Sunday, Oct.14 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
A twilight fireworks show is planned for Saturday from 5:30 to 9 p.m.
Like the Blue Angels, the Thunderbirds train as the official jet demonstration squadron for the Air Force.
This is the first time in years the Blue Angels decided not to participate in the event. Instead, the Thunderbirds will maneuver through the air with six different aircraft, presenting formation flying and solo performances.
The Thunderbirds have impressed audiences since 1953 with acrobatic maneuvers at a variety of events, including the 1996 Olympics and several other air shows.
The event will also feature stunts from other performance teams, including the Marine Corps AB-8B Harrier and the world’s best civilian pilots and parachute teams from the Army.
Organizers say the MCAS Miramar Air Show is one of America’s finest, receiving awards in the past for “Best Air Show.”
In addition to the air tricks, spectators will have the opportunity to explore more than 100 aircraft on display and to practice their flying skills with simulation rides.
The twilight show will feature afterburner passes, a “shockwave” jet-truck and fireworks display.
“There will also be a Wall of Fire,” said Marine Cpl. James Hoke of MCAS Miramar. “The Wall of Fire will be as long as the flight line.”
Parking, admission and blanket seating are all free. Paid seats are available in the grandstand.
