Third Annual Vocal Summit set for Sept. 9 at Dizzy’s

On Sept. 9, Dizzy’s will be the site of the Third Annual Vocal Summit. Hosted by vocalist Allison Adams Tucker, she will be joined by singers Leonard Patton, Rebecca Jade and Lisa Hightower, backed by a group of acclaimed musicians, including Melonie Grinnell (piano), Claudio Rochat-Felix (drums) and Rob Thorsen (bass). All the singers are world class, headliners in their own right, with Jade recently on the road with Shiela E. The event was created to showcase the power of the human voice and succeeds on all counts. If you enjoy jazz, pop standards or smoky lounge music, you will love this show.
Third Annual Vocal Summit: Sunday, Sept. 9, at Dizzy’s at Arias Hall, 1717 Morena Blvd. 7 p.m. dizzysjazz.com. Jazz fans won’t want to miss the Leonard Patton Trio, performing at Grassroots Oasis on Sept. 8. Featuring Ed Kornhauser (keys) and Sean Hicke (bass), the sparse arrangements work to highlight Patton’s soulful voice. One of San Diego’s unsung gems, Patton is adept at recast version of everything from standards to Michael Jackson, with several albums of terrific originals, most recently “A Beautiful Day.” The Leonard Patton Trio: Saturday, Sept. 8 at the Grassroots Oasis, 3130 Moore St. 7:30 p.m. All ages. grassrootsoasis.com. Jazz continues to be one of the fastest-growing scenes in San Diego, with a new night recently added to Tio Leo’s weekly schedule. From now on, Wednesdays, from 7 to 10 p.m., will feature jazz. On Sept. 12, the night will include pianist Danny Green and saxophone player Tripp Sprague, while Sept. 19 will feature guitarist Louis Valenzuela. All are virtuoso musicians, well worth hearing, but the nod here goes to Green whose seemingly effortless piano playing is a marvel of melody. Danny Green: Wednesday, Sept. 12 at Tio Leo’s, 5302 Napa St. 7 p.m. 21 and up. tioleos.com. Currently touring in support of his latest album, “Come from Within,” singer-songwriter Casey Turner performs at Cannonball on Sept. 13. While most artists are lucky to get a spin on a local radio show, Turner aim’s high. Indeed, his single “Waves On The Ocean” has the distinction of being the first pop-reggae tune to have it debut in outer space, played aboard the International Space Station in 2016. This event is the perfect match of venue and artist, Turner’s acoustic island reggae sounds are ideal for Cannonball’s sunny deck, mere feet from the Pacific Ocean. Turner’s songs are instant earworms, custom made for singing along or just enjoying as a background soundtrack to a day at the beach. Casey Turner: Thursday, Sept. 13 at Cannonball. 3105 Ocean Front Walk. 5 p.m. 21 and up. cannonballsd.com. San Diego’s best instrumental surf music trio, Alvino & The Dwells, perform at the 710 Beach Club on Sept. 19. Featuring brothers Tony (bass) and Didier Saurez (drums), alongside incendiary guitarist David Fleminger, the band eschews the obvious cover songs, instead going for deep cuts as well as terrific originals such as “Torostar,” which perfectly capture the feel of those original 1960s tracks. The band is currently working on their debut album, but anyone who enjoys instrumental rock ‘n’ roll will want to see them live where Fleminger’s stand out guitar work can be truly appreciated. Alvino & The Dwells: Tuesday, Sept. 18, at the 710 Beach Club, 710 Garnet Ave. 9 p.m. 21 and up. 710bc.com. Guitarist Randy Jackson of ’80s hard rockers, Zebra, appears at Brick by Brick on Sept. 19. Although the band never made it to the big leagues, they have nevertheless become cult favorites, for their Zep-esque brand of rock ‘n’ roll as heard on their 1983 hit, “Who’s Behind the Door.” Jackson has continued to perform over the decades, including a stint with The Jefferson Airplane and occasionally playing with a reunited Zebra. For this show Jackson will be performing in acoustic mode giving fans a chance to experience a more intimate side of the former stadium rocker.
Randy Jackson: Wednesday, Sept. 19, at Brick by Brick, 1130 Buenos Ave. 8:30 p.m. 21 and up. $20. brickbybrick.com.
