They’ll be Dancing in the Streets at the Adams Avenue Street Fair
By Leslie Wolf Branscomb
The 28th annual Adams Avenue Street Fair will bring two days filled with an amazing variety of music to Uptown on September 26 and 27.
More than 70 musical acts will perform on six stages spread out over an eight-block area throughout the weekend. The lineup includes everything from power pop to gospel music, blues, Gypsy jazz, Irish rock, funk and soul.
The Adams Avenue Business Association, which puts on the event, expects more than 100,000 people to attend over both days. In addition to the music, there will be a carnival, three beer gardens, and more than 300 arts, crafts and food vendors.
Asked which acts people should try not to miss, Adams Avenue Business Association Executive Director Jim Schneider pondered a moment. “I’d say all of them,” he answered. “We do such a good job of attracting so many different acts here, there’s something for everyone.”
Many of the participating acts are already familiar to San Diego music aficionados, and more than a few of the musicians have taken home trophies from the San Diego Music Awards. Among those playing on Saturday are The Zeros — the veteran punk band that formed in Chula Vista more than three decades ago, and took home the SDMA’s Lifetime Achievement award on Sept. 10. Sunday’s acts include Get Back Loretta, an alternative rock band that won the SDMA’s Best New Artist in 2005, and won Best Pop Album this year.
Also playing are The Palominos, a honkytonk and country band; Cash’d Out, a Johnny Cash tribute band; indie bands Silverleaf and Republic of Letters, and Chicano folk singers Los Alacranes. On Saturday look for Sol E Mar with their Brazilian and Cuban drumming, and a special treat Sunday is sure to be the appearance of legendary blues guitarist Roy Gaines.
