With help from Jennifer Eve, a parent volunteer with professional radio experience, students at Muirlands Middle School will begin a La Jolla radio station, LJRadio, dedicated to providing the community with news, information and entertainment.
LJRadio will hold an open house from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, with tours, demonstrations and food.
“The students are learning real-world skills on how to communicate more effectively and work together to produce their shows,” Eve said via e-mail.
Eve worked at eight different radio stations over a ten-year stint in the industry and specialized in several areas of the profession, such as on-air broadcasting, promotions and programming. She also has a background in teaching.
The 20 students who make up the LJRadio staff have been using the Adobe Audition editing program to record their broadcasts onto computers, according to Eve.
“We have state-of-the-art equipment because of a generous grant from Las Patronas,” she said. “The students are learning and enjoying working with this new digital technology.”
The program consists of an advisory class that meets for 30 minutes three days a week and an LJRadio Club that meets for 30 minutes once a week after school.
During this time, radio staff has been learning broadcasting skills from Eve and picking up tips from other classmates, such as how to copy their programs on CDs and ideas for new introduction themes for their shows.
Under Eve’s tutoring, students have learned to find their radio voices, conduct research for interviews and radio show ideas and produce reports using digital equipment.
The community has also pitched in to get the program started. Furniture donations from bkmOfficeWorks provided a work area for the students, MC Communications donated its Internet service and additional support has come from the Muirlands Foundation, the Associated Student Government (ASB) of Muirlands and Chris Hargrave, Muirlands Middle School’s principal.
