La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School’s 2009 senior class will gather Friday, May 29, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the school’s amphitheater for its commencement ceremony. About 89 seniors will begin the tradition around 1 p.m. Friday, receiving their caps and gowns, said Francine Phillips, the school’s senior communications officer. “The ceremony starts at 2 and then they have a class photo,” Phillips said. “[The commencement] is done in the outdoor amphitheater on the campus.” LJCD senior Samir Junnarkar will address graduating seniors during the commencement ceremony. “Junnarkar came to Country Day in grade 3 and will be going to Stanford to major in business and economics,” Phillips said. Upper school director Rod Jemison is also scheduled to speak, “congratulating the class of 2009, and he’ll be naming some accomplishments,” Phillips said. This year’s senior class has myriad accomplishments, according to Phillips. “We have seniors that have been accepted to all eight Ivy League schools,” Phillips said. Phillips said all the graduates are moving on to college and all but one to four-year institutions. LJCD holds a tradition in which Torreys seniors ring an old school bell to commemorate the 1926 LJCD, when it was located at La Jolla’s Wisteria Cottage and called the Balmer School. Students ring this bell before tossing their caps into the air. For more information about LJCD, visit www.ljcds.org.
