Several local scholastic track teams raced to victories over the last week.
On the girls side, La Jolla High defeated Scripps Ranch, 74-62.
“In this meet, every single point was important because I knew it would be close,” La Jolla head coach Roger Karnopp said. “Many girls really fought hard for the third places.”
In that category were Meagan Forrey and Cecilia Nguyen in the long and short hurdles and Matti Sharp in the 400. There were three double winners for La Jolla: Dana Hoolko in the pole vault and 200, Emma Strong in the shot put and discus, and Amanda Clausen in the high jump and triple jump.
The win was iced by sweeping the 3200 with Margot Hedlin, Maya Gamble, and Laurie Mittermiller; and the pole vault with Hoolko, Lauren Christensen and Malia Plotken.
“They knew what they had to do and they rose to the occasion and did an awesome job,” Karnopp noted. “As always, I am extremely proud of all the efforts.”
On the boys side, La Jolla High comes into action this week with a record of 3-0.
Some athletes doing well to date are Charlie Gamble, whose stellar performance at the Arcadia Invititational included a personal best of 9:34.98 to place fourth in his heat. He then was a part of the distance medley the next day that broke the school record at 10:49.35. Other members of that record-setting relay were Peng Chen, Christian Schwarz and Alex Todd.
La Jolla was set for a big challenge on April 19 when the Vikings went up against St. Augustine, as the Village News went to press. This meet could determine the Western League champions. The Vikings will also be in action at the Otay Ranch Relays on April 22.
At The Bishop’s School, both the boys and girls topped Tri-City Christian and Santa Fe Christian last Thursday.
“We captured quite a few of the events, but we are really strong in the distance events (both boys and girls) and the 4-by-100-meter relays (again, boys and girls),” Bishop’s head coach Mary Fran Cullen said.
Standouts include Laura Wyatt and Elizabeth Schulze (both ninth graders) in the distance events, Caitlin O’Neil (12th) and Marjorie Lacombe (freshman) in the sprints, and Aubrey Doede in high jump.
On the boys’ side, top performances include Nick Lake and Eudoro Orozco (both 12th-graders) in the middle distances, Bubba Peterson (12th) in sprints, and a newcomer, junior Wells Lee, in the shot put.
La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School saw action recently at the Jaguar Invitational. Anna Blumenfeld won the shot and discus; Taylor Sarkaria set a new school record in the pole vault at 11-0; and Tricia Decker tied the school record at 7-6. LJCD meets Horizon and San Dieguito Academy today, April 20.
