Taste buds on the Peninsula will be tantalized as the Point Loma High School Pointer Association (PLHSPA) prepares for its second annual Bite of Point Loma.
The walking tour event, scheduled from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on April 21 is a major effort by the group to present an evening of Liberty Station food, fun, music, auctions and raffles to the community while raising $25,000 to support the school’s “3 A’s,” which include academics, arts and athletics.
Music, entertainment and guest services will be provided by Pointer students.
Last year’s event was a sell-out, leaving a number of wishful walk-ups unable to join the crowds enjoying a mild evening while walking between numerous participating eateries, savoring succulent samples and visiting with friends.
A number of Liberty Station’s finest cuisines will be offered during the event including Oggi’s, Fig Tree Cafe, Tender Greens, Fitzee Foods, Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza, Slater’s 50/50, Solare and many more.
“Point Loma High School educates 2,000 students whose families support the many businesses in our community,” event co-chairs Andrea Justus and Karen Duvall Meyer said. “The PLHSPA covers numerous critical educational needs no longer funded due to school district budget cuts.”
Tickets for the event are priced at $35 each and can be purchased in three ways:
-BiteOfPointLomaEvent.mydagsite.com; -www.pointlomahigh.com and click on the Pointer Association tab, or
-(619) 206-7638. Persons interested in sponsorship opportunities or wishing to make donations can also visit the event website. The PLHSPA is a 501(b) organization and 100 percent of all donations go directly to student programs.
Donations are also being sought for a raffle and silent auction to be held at the event. Business owners and others able to donate gift certificates, merchandise or services should email [email protected] or send donations to: PLHSPA Bite of Point Loma, 1220 Rosecrans 247, San Diego, CA 92106 by April 15.
Among academic areas of focus by the PLHSPA are purchase of chemicals and equipment for science laboratory experiments to make Pointer students college-ready. In English classes, every PLHS freshman is provided a critical writing program to improve written communication. And students are excited about a new Engineering program beginning on campus as the PLHSPA helps with many start-up costs.
In the arts, PLHS now has the only performing marching band in the entire San Diego Unified School District, and while the budget provides nothing for instruments or uniforms, the PLHSPA supplies them to insure continuation of the school’s award-winning program. Also, a new student art gallery (open to the public) and theater costume shop, are funded by the PLHSPA.
Athletically, the PLHSPA provides supplies and staff for more than 800 student athletes on 28 varsity teams and the freshman and junior varsities that support them. PLHS’s acclaimed sports medicine education program, in conjunction with Point Loma Nazarene University, and the presence of a certified athletic trainer at athletic events are funded by PLHSPA committees.
