OK pet lovers—pucker up and get ready to share the love at a couple of canine-centric celebrations that benefit needy pups. Along with haute (doggy) couture and top-notch noshing, these upcoming events offer the chance to extend a helping paw to man’s—and woman’s— best friend.
From 2 to 5 p.m. tomorrow, Feb. 5, those fabulously flat-faced, furry fashionistas will strut their stuff in their finest outfits during the Pugs ‘n Kisses Wine and Cheese Fashion Show at Fido & Co. Canine Country Club in Hillcrest. The $20 per-person admission fee includes four glasses of wine, a cheese-and-cracker spread, and sweets galore (nonalcoholic beverages are also available). Last year’s inaugural event attracted some 100 dog lovers eager to watch nattily attired pugs work the runway, enter their own dogs into the show, or both. The modest fashion show entry fee—$5 per pug—includes a souvenir photo taken by a professional “pugographer.” The event, which also offers a boutique and pug kissing booth and the chance to win themed raffle baskets, is sure to put a smile on your pug, er, mug.

Bowsers of all breeds—and their owners—can also come raise a glass (or lap a bowl) at the Smooches & Pooches Yappy Hour, 4 to 8 p.m. Feb. 12, at La Jolla Brew House. Held on the Brew House’s lovely heated patio, this fundraiser for Southern California German Shepherd Rescue includes pet- and people-appropriate treats, a kissing booth, adoptable puppies, drink specials ($5 Smoochy Poochy martini menu, $4 pints and wines), Cupid’s Dinner specials, and even a canine menu. Browse among vendors such as Stella & Dot (jewelry), Sunrise Leashes (guess), visit with a pet psychic, and enter a raffle for goodies ranging from grooming and gift baskets and pet day care for Fido, to theater tickets and golf packages for the two-legged set.
