San Diego police continue to investigate a fatal stabbing that occurred late Friday near the Ocean Beach Pier.
Just after 11 p.m., California Fish and Game officers patrolling the Ocean Beach Pier were alerted to a fight on the sand near 1950 Abbott St., according to Lt. Manny Guaderrama of the San Diego Police Department’s Homicide Unit.
The two officers witnessed the two men fighting. As the officers approached the men, they saw that the alleged suspect, Robert Daniel Garcia, 46, had a knife, at which point the officers ordered him to put down weapon, Guaderrama said.
After Garcia laid down the knife, the officers took him into custody without further incident and called SDPD.
Guaderrama said the victim has been identified at 46-year-old Richard Schoeller.
“[The victim] died at the scene from stab wounds,” Guaderrama said.
It is not immediately clear where Schoeller was from, according to officials.
The men had reportedly been having an argument that escalated into a physical confrontation, Guaderrama said.
Garcia allegedly stabbed Schoeller several times during the altercation, he said.
Responding medical personnel actually made the pronouncement of death, according to reports.
Witnesses reported to police officers that the two men were acquaintances who frequented Ocean Beach, Guaderrama said.
Garcia was expected to be arraigned Wednesday, July 25, at 1:30 p.m.
He is being charged with murder, according to San Diego County District Attorney officials.
