The journey of a lifetime wrapped up on Sunday, Nov. 20 at Waterfront Park in San Diego. About 2,000 participants began their 60-mile walk on Friday morning, which wound its way through La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Mission Bay, and Point Loma in a united effort to fight for a world without breast cancer, raising a total of $5.3 million.

The Susan G. Komen 3-Day is the longest distance one can go in the fight against breast cancer. Participants each raised a minimum of $2,300 and walked 20 miles a day for three consecutive days, all while educating tens of thousands of people about breast health.

The funds raised will support Susan G. Komen’s vision of a world without breast cancer, contributing to the organizations more than $1.1 billion investment in breakthrough research and more than $2.3 billion for real-time support for those facing breast cancer today, through screening, diagnostics, education, treatment, and psychosocial support programs. To date, $154.7 million has been raised through the Komen San Diego 3-Day.

“We cannot thank our amazing 3-Day family enough for their time and dedication to this cause,” said Paula Schneider, Komen’s president and CEO. “Every step that is taken during the 3-Day brings us that much closer to ending breast cancer forever. The money raised by the San Diego 3-Day community will help advance research discovery and fund real support for people facing their battle with breast cancer.”

Participants of the 3-Day have trained and fundraised for several months in preparation for the event, which fosters lifelong friendships and memories while providing the community a moving opportunity to honor those who have battled and those who continue to fight breast cancer. Participants spent the weekend walking through the San Diego area before wrapping up the 3-Day weekend with a moving closing ceremony at Waterfront Park. Additional information is available on The3Day.org.
