It is only natural when you live next to the Pacific Ocean that you are going to want to surf at some point.
If you have the surfing itch, one place to scratch it is at Surf Diva, and this summer is no different.
Established in 1996 by twin sisters Izzy and Coco Tihanyi, Surf Diva has introduced thousands of women from all over the world to the sport and spirit of surfing and is internationally recognized as the world’s leading surf school. With Izzy as the “Surf” and Coco the “Diva,” the Surf Diva boutique opened its doors in 2004 on the strip of Avenida de la Playa. Surf lessons (both group and privates), corporate clinics, and bachelorette parties are offered all year round.
La Jolla’s very own Surf Diva offers a variety of activities every summer for kids ages 5 to 17.
Surf Diva operates La Jolla Surf Camp (for ages 5 to 10) and Australian Surf Academy (for ages 11 to 17), both co-ed day camps during the summer months of June through August.
“We keep our kids to instructor ratio 1:3,” said Natalie Leung, who oversees marketing for Surf Diva. “Apart from surfing, day campers will also play a variety of games on the beach, learn about the environment, ocean safety and awareness. Additionally, Surf Diva offers boarding school, and all-girls overnight surf camp for teens. For adults looking for co-ed group lessons, they can sign-up with La Jolla Surf Camp, ‘Party Wave.’ Lessons are daily at 1 p.m. for ages 12 and up.”
Leung agrees that surfing is a great sport for both boys and girls.
“It’s healthy and fun,” Leung said. “La Jolla Shores is the best beach and is great for beginners. Girls now have programs geared towards them and at Surf Diva, we also make girls-specific equipment and clothing. We are definitely seeing more divas out in the water locally.”
There is still plenty of time to register your kids for a summer of learning and fun in the water.
Co-ed day camps, both half and full day, are offered weekly now through Aug. 29.
For further information, visit La Jolla Surf Camp (ages 5-10), www.lajollasurfcamp.com or Australian Surf Academy (ages 11-17), www.australiansurfacademy.com. Boarding school, the all-girls overnight surf camp, runs July 6-12, July 13-19 and July 20-26.
Register online at www.surfdiva.com or call an office diva, (858) 454-8273.
Surf Diva also surfaced with a fund-raising opportunity for local organizations, “Retail Therapy,” at the Surf Diva boutique.
“Up to 20 percent of the evening’s revenue will be donated to the charity of choice,” Leung noted. “In the past, we’ve fundraised for organizations such as World Aids Day, Spreckels Elementary, Life Rolls On, TOMS shoes and many more.”
So whether it is teaching a new crop of surfers or doing something for the local community, Surf Diva continues to make waves.
