Summer concert series returns

Summer celebration returns to the Peninsula for multiple engagements as the Point Loma Summer Concerts Series dances into its eighth season beginning Friday, July 18.
Every Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. through Aug. 15 at Point Loma Park, 1049 Catalina Blvd., a different band will hit the stage for the enjoyment of concert-goers.
The lineup this year consists of Porterhouse Bob and Down to the Bone with New Orleans brass, blues, and boogie; classic country and roots rock band Big Rig Deluxe; Soul Persuaders with the top hits of Motown, soul and R&B; The Screamin’ Primas with some Las Vegas swing; and ” returning for its fifth year ” Rockola, performing America’s classic rock.
The Point Loma concert series is completely volunteer-based, with community members, families and the Point Loma Association all pitching in to help plan and produce the event.
The concert series has continued to grow and attract more and more families with its family atmosphere during its 8-year span. Last year the series attracted an estimated 1,200 to 1,500 people, according to concert volunteer Kerri DeRosier.
“This is a great excuse to get the community together, to see your neighbors and enjoy a beautiful night,” said DeRosier.
Concertgoers can also enjoy picnics with meals from home or pre-ordered box dinners provided by C.J.’s Catering.
All orders are to be pre-paid and called in by noon on the day of the concert, and will be delivered directly to the park for pickup after 5:30 p.m.
Beverages will be sold at the park, with profits going toward the Peninsula Lions Club.
The city and county fund the event, along with private foundations and businesses, individual gifts and in-kind donations of goods and services.
Major funding comes from the San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture and the San Diego County Community Enhancement Program. Willis Allen Real Estate is the presenting sponsor.
Free parking is provided at Silver Gate Elementary School. Shuttles will run between the school parking lot and the park from 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
For directions, menus, rules and additional information, visit www.plconcerts.org.
To pre-order a box dinner call C.J.’s Catering at (619) 224-8004.
