Suburban showgirl returns to Village for play

La Jolla High School alumnus Wendy Suzanne Palmer Davis returns to her roots this weekend to perform her play “Suburban Showgirl” at the campus’ Parker Auditorium.
“In a nutshell, it’s about the dedication and commitment to pursuing one’s passion,” Palmer Davis said.
Palmer Davis began studying dance in San Diego at age 7. She was featured in movies opposite stars like Tom Hanks and on television shows including “CSI: Las Vegas” before dancing her way back to her hometown to share a one-woman show she wrote and choreographed.
“San Diego is a great part of my show,” Palmer Davis said. “So much of my show is a tribute to the mentors and the teachers I’ve had throughout my life.”
Palmer Davis said that a constant theme is parents investing in their children.
“It’s a touching story that both parents, artists, kids and grandparents can relate to in one way or the other,” she said.
Although Palmer Davis said this was her first time writing, producer Gary Marshall discovered “Suburban Showgirl” at the end of its six-week run.
“It was really great having his endorsement,” Palmer Davis said. The play became part of the Gary Marshall Presents Series.
Palmer Davis wove her own life experiences into “Suburban Showgirl.” She begins the play representing a ballroom dance teacher. But Palmer Davis takes on many other characters, including a young dancer, college student, professional dancer and a working mother, she said.
“Suburban Showgirl” will be performed Saturday, June 7 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, June 8 at 4 p.m., with a running time of about 90 minutes. The show is appropriate for all audiences.
Parker Auditorium is located at La Jolla High School, 750 Nautilus St. Tickets are $25, with discounts for students and military. To purchase tickets to “Suburban Showgirl,” go to www.ticketleap.com.
