Students, survivors walk for Gormly at Relay For Life

Point Loma and Ocean Beach joined forces with the American Cancer Society by having a community Relay For Life. The two-day event was held at Liberty Station over April 22-23. Several hundred people participated in the Relay For Life and raised more than $13,500, with more donations expected.
Donations can still be made by visiting RelayForLife.org/PtLomaOceanBeachCA. The Point Loma-Ocean Beach Relay For Life had 19 teams from around the community. One special team was from Point Loma High School. A large number of students and adults came together to honor the memory of their former vice principal Kevin Gormly. Gormly lost a long hard-fought battle to cancer last year, and was an inspiration to everyone who had the privilege to know him. The school’s ROTC and choir program also participated at the event.
Another group that made a significant impact on everyone at the Relay For Life was the team made up of cancer survivors. Their energy and glow was inspirational to both the young and old. After the opening ceremony, the cancer survivor team started off the relay with the other teams following.
Founded by Dr. Gordy Klatt in 1985, Relay For Life is the largest fundraiser to fight cancer in the United States and around the world. The event is staffed and coordinated by volunteers in more than 5,000 communities. San Diego has several Relay For Life events planned around the city and county for 2017.
