A pair of local scholastic girls field hockey teams continue their winning ways this season.
At The Bishop’s School, the Lady Knights under head coach Kristin Davidson entered play this week with a record of 6-4-1.
Key players recently have included Lia Sagerman, Pria Mudan, Riley Sexton, Daryl Griglak, Erin Ryan, Winnie Eastwood and goalie Sarah Shults.
“Bishop’s is playing well as a team and the players really know each other’s strengths,” Davidson remarked. “The defense is solid, strong, and dependable, with good communication and awareness of the field. The midfielders are great about overlapping with the defense and also have honed their pass-back skills. The forwards and midfielders continue to perfect their short corners and their quick passes up the field and into the circle.”
Davidson also noted that the support of the junior varsity team is remarkable and energizing.
“We have never had a more excited group of underclassmen, truly excited about playing field hockey and bonding as a team,” she added.
At La Jolla High School, the Lady Vikings under head coach Kristy Wolfmayer came into action this week with a record of 7-4.
In action last week, La Jolla dropped a 1-0 decision to Madison in a game that went through regulation, overtime and finally into penalty strokes.
To finish the week, the Lady Vikings scored a 2-0 win over Mission Bay. La Jolla got a pair of goals from Sandra Harpster, with assists from Kristina Mendez and Jenny Russell.
“We have improved a great deal from last year,” Wolfmayer noted. “Now that the league is moving into the second round, we are looking forward to improving on our standings from the first round of our league.”
Some key players who have stood out include Claire Mittermiller, Harpster, Russell, Maddy Sharpe and Gina Schumacher.
“We have been down some injuries and many of the girls have really stepped up their performance and done a great job,” Wolfmayer added.
