Four teams of eight-graders from La Mesa’s St. Martin of Tours Academy participated in the SeaPerch underwater robotics competition at Grossmont College in April, vying against 36 teams from high schools and middle schools across Southern California and Arizona for a chance to advance to the national competition.

Students Anna Hedberg, Catalina Vivanco and Emily Close comprised the second-best team at the event, earning an invitation to the national competition at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in May. They will be joined in Massachusetts by their science teacher, Rosie Beck.
The SeaPerch program gives teachers and students the resources to build an underwater remotely operated vehicle from a kit of low-cost, easily accessible parts. The hands-on learning experience is accompanied by a curriculum of engineering, mathematics and science concepts with an emphasis on marine engineering.
