Spring sports at PLHS already off to promising start for 2012

Point Loma High School Athletic Director John Murphy reports 800 students at the school are involved in sports programs in fall and winter seasons. Spring sports should push that number even higher, according to Murphy. Among winter teams, girls’ water polo is off to an excellent start with victories over Clairemont (13-4), Santana (16-14) and Mission Bay (6-1) after a four-match losing streak to powerful Valhalla, West Hills, Grossmont and Eastlake. Coach Jerry Rich’s team began the season splitting matches with Del Norte and a defeat of Hilltop (14-5), leaving them with a 4-5 record as Eastern League play began this week against Serra (Jan. 10) and Mission Bay (Jan. 12).  Team leaders are Monica Longworth (19 goals, 13 assists), Maddie Lampe (20, 6) and Allison Sutherland (13, 4). In goal, Gia Romano has a 7.6 goals against average. * * *  In girls’ basketball, new head coach Dave Aros and his squad won their Central League-opener Jan. 6 with a 37-32 victory over Crawford.  In non-league action, the Lady Pointers recorded a 2-4 mark with wins coming against High Tech San Diego (51-18) and High Tech Chula Vista (52-24). Other Central League games will be against Christian, Coronado, Madison, Kearny and Clairemont. No statistics are available. * * *  In the ocean, the Pointers surf team scored a major victory by defeating county power Torrey Pines. The team also came within two points of beating rival La Jolla. Coach John Murphy said a top performer on the team incorrectly believed competition had ended and let up, losing the needed points to defeat the Vikings. While competition broke for winter holidays, meets will begin again soon, Murphy said. The events include competition in longboard, shortboard and bodyboards for both boys and girls. PLHS also offers a surf P.E. class that meets daily at Ocean Beach before other classes. Murphy also conducts this popular program. * * * In boys’ soccer, the Pointers earned their second win of the season with a 3-0 shutout against Serra last month. Coach Elliott Savitz’s team carries a 2-4-1 overall record with its other victory a 6-1 drubbing of Kearny. Losses have come against Otay Ranch, Scripps Ranch, Orange Glen and Hoover, three by way of shutouts. Miguel Alcantar leads his team with three goals, while Felipe Soares and Eddie Gallardo have two each.  Other league opponents include La Jolla, University City, St. Augustine and Cathedral Catholic. * * * In girls’ soccer, the Pointers are out to defend their league championship from last season. To date, coach John Murphy’s team has a record of 2-5-1 with victories against Olympian (3-0) and San Diego (2-0). Veronica Perez, with two goals and four assists, is the scoring leader. Megan O’Beirne, Tala Sullivan, Taylor Hopkins, Victoria Gonzalez, Audrey Herrin-Warner and Ella Verhees each have one goal. In goal, standout keeper Lily Edwards has a goals-against average of 2.5 with three shutouts. * * * Perhaps the strongest winter team is that of boys’ basketball, where an opening Central League victory over Crawford (77-49) improved their record to 6-4. Chris Brisco’s team also recorded an 80-14 blowout of High Tech San Diego last week. Scoring leaders are Kohl Meyer (15.3 points per game), Dillon Fitzmorris (13.1), Jamal Agnew (9.6) and Dan Enright (8.1). Fitzmorris’ has 29 three-point baskets while Meyer has 20. * * * Wrestling coach Phil Moore has seen great improvement in his team over the last two seasons. The current group, which includes several girls, has shown well in several tournaments and matches to date, although results were unavailable.
