Junior Lifeguards seek sponsors for long ‘swim’
The San Diego Junior Lifeguards are swimming all the way to Hawaii on July 9. Members of the SDJG will attempt to collectively swim, paddle or run about 2,600 miles, or the distance between San Diego and the Hawaiian Islands, in one day to raise money to teach local children how to swim.
The lifeguards are seeking business and individual sponsors to donate a set dollar amount for each mile swum. Money raised will fund learn-to-swim programs at City Heights Pool, the Jackie Robinson YMCA and Muirlands Middle School, in addition to scholarships for prospective junior lifeguards.
Fifteen percent of San Diego Junior Lifeguards receive scholarships to participate in the program. The SDJG teaches youth ages 9 through 17 water-rescue techniques, CPR, first-aid and other lifeguard duties.
