Group will gather gear for underprivileged kids
Baseball players can donate their used bats, gloves, cleats, helmets, catching gear or batting gloves to Kids Gear for Baseball, which is collecting these donations and giving them to San Diego County kids that might not otherwise be able to play this sport.
In addition to accepting donations, Kids Gear for Baseball hopes “to get the awareness out that there is an organization such as Kids Gear for Baseball, where instead of throwing it away or giving it to Goodwill, [people] can find a place and donate their equipment and know that we then pass it on to children in need of it,” said Barbara Ouellette, one of the directors of Kids Gear for Baseball.
Kids Gear for Baseball will have bins to accept donations on Saturday, March 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., near the snack bar at Bronco Field at the La Jolla YMCA, 8355 Cliffridge Ave. La Jolla High School’s baseball team will also be playing its first game of the season at Cliffridge Park.
Kids Gear for Baseball is a nonprofit organization run by baseball players and parents of La Jolla High School and The Bishop’s School. Those who would like to donate equipment or make a financial donation are asked to call (858) 551-7505 or (619) 985-5437.

Viking varsity sluggers top alumni
The 14th annual La Jolla High School Alumni Baseball Game was a pitchers duel for six innings last weekend, but then the bats came to life. A 2-1 game turned into a slugfest in the seventh inning, leading to a 20-5 varsity squad victory.
Six decades of alums were led by Jon Felfoldi (two shutout innings, 2-RBI triple), Jack Boyl (two shutout innings), Matt Yanke (two innings, 1 run) and Gary Frank (double). Ty Eveleth, Bryan Hidalgo and Chris Circuit added hits for the alumni.
Juniors Zack Tonks and Trent Jemmett paced the varsity with four hits apiece. Wyatt Hoff, Casey Richmond, Patrick Christensen, Robert Sprong, Blake Shelburne, Kevin Jones and David Harpster pitched effectively for the Vikings, holding the alums to only two runs.
La Jolla High head baseball coach Gary Frank was pleased with the Vikings’ performance.
“We had a complete game today with excellent pitching, solid defense and timely hitting,” Frank said. “Our players are working hard and are looking forward to the start of our season.”
