Addie’s Studio One expands into UC
Addie’s Studio One on One, 4440 Ingraham St. in Pacific Beach, recently opened a second location in University City.
The new studio is located at 8935 Towne Centre Drive, Suite 105, and owners Addie and Tyler Merrill are offering a 10 percent discount on personal training through the end of January.
Founded in 2001, Addie’s Studio One on One focuses on personal exercise goals that can be tailored to specific needs or physical challenges. Areas of specialization include functional training, rehabilitation, body sculpting, all-sport and strength training.
In February, Addie’s is hosting the “Remodel Your Body” fund-raising challenge to benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
The challenge lasts 10 weeks and participants compete to see who can lose the most relative body weight. The initial body fat measurements will be taken by appointment from Feb. 5 to Feb. 9. For information, call (858) 677-9480.

Centurion wrestlers beat Madison, fall to Cathedral
The University City High wrestling team has grappled with success to date this winter.
UC head coach Jeret Needham and the Centurions have gone 1-1 in league matches, beating Madison (53-27) and falling to Cathedral (39-37).
“Our team is young but talented,” Needham said.
First-year wrestler Steven Esquivel has been on fire at the 152-pound weight class, going 23-6 so far. He has placed first or second in three tournaments and was named team captain.
In action last Saturday, UC wrestled in a tournament at San Ysidro, finishing in fourth place with four wrestlers in the finals. Freshman James Madden placed first at 215 pounds, while freshmen Andrew Altomare and Conner Toomes finished second, along with junior Thiago Soares. Sophomore Kevin McCarty has placed second and third in his last three consecutive tournaments.
The Centurions kids club wrestled at Rancho Bernardo on Jan 21. Lake Needham won his eighth consecutive tournament with a come-from-behind 5-4 victory. Needham is currently undefeated at 25-0.
Also winning gold were Jacob Goddard and Adam Barton. Silver medalists Adrian Ortiz, Toby Brown and Zackey Barnhill, who all had great matches.

Polo teams make strides despite youth
Several local scholastic girls water polo teams have been making a splash in recent play.
At La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School, head coach Nate Heppner and the Lady Torreys recorded two tough losses recently to Mission Bay and Serra.
In a 15-10 loss to Mission Bay, junior Becca Poliner and freshman Amanda Solomon each scored three goals for the Lady Torreys.
“The season is going well considering we have a very young team (no seniors, three juniors),” Heppner said. “Our goals from here on out are to win as many league games as possible, and hopefully eclipse our win total from last year (six).”
At University City High, head coach Ty Lackey and the Lady Centurions sported a record of 4-9 going into last week.
Among the losses were a pair to the top two ranked teams in the area, The Bishop’s School and Coronado, and one to La Jolla.
Junior Page Squiller has had the biggest impact this year, leading the team with 25 goals, six assists, 22 steals and 27 ejections drawn. Her best game so far was against La Jolla, in which she had four goals.

LJCD gridders honored
A number of La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School football players were recently honored as members of the 2006 All-Pacific League Football Team. LJCD captured the league football crown along the way.
The league’s coaches select 11 first- and second-team offensive and defensive squads plus an all-league kicker. The Torreys had nine first-team and three second-team players honored.
Leading the way for the Torreys were Pacific League Offensive Player of the Year Kevin Ings and Pacific League Defensive Player of the Year Collin Tuck.
Other honored LJCD players included Mark Schu (tight end, first-team offense); Travis Golia (kicker, first-team); Alex Yanez (offensive line, first-team); Nikil Nagaraj (offensive line, second-team); Montell Allen (defensive back, first-team), Alex Ferre (defensive line, second-team), John Hansrough (defensive line, first-team); Chris Birks (linebacker, second-team); and Andy Altman (defensive line, second-team).

Rugby league holds clinics, games
Signups for youth touch rugby clinics and basic contact rugby for kids 16 and younger are ongoing. Practices are Wednesdays from 3:45 to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the North Clairemont Recreation Center, 4421 Bannock Ave.
