Young Angler tourney slated for Aug. 2
Young anglers ranging in ages from 6 to 15 will be competing in the upcoming sixth annual Young Angler Tournament series, a free event taking place on Shelter Island on Saturday, Aug. 2.
The saltwater event is sponsored by the International Game Fish Association and the San Diego Sportfishing Council.
The tournament will feature a points system to allow for catch and release. Winners in each age category will be determined by adding up points for various fish caught. The event will also feature prizes and raffle drawings for such items as rods and reels, hats, T-shirts and fishing gear. Half-day fishing trips are being donated by H&M Landing.
Young anglers are encouraged to bring their own gear, although a limited number of loaner rods will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The event takes place at the Shelter Island Pier, 1776 Shelter Island Drive. Registration begins at 9 a.m., followed by the fishing derby from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Hot dogs, chips and sodas will be served to all registered young anglers.
Advance registration is encouraged. For more information, call (619) 234-8793, or visit www.sportfishing.org.
