La Jolla sluggers split pair of games
The La Jolla High varsity baseball team continued to play well as they split a pair of games last week in the Bully’s East Tournament.
Patrick Christensen threw six shutout innings, allowing only four hits and a hit batter, and Casey Richmond came on for the save as La Jolla defeated the Mission Hills Grizzlies 3-1.
Third baseman Jimmy Filter singled home the first run of the game in the third inning and put the Vikings up for good. La Jolla added a couple of insurance runs in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Trent Jemmett and a wild pitch that allowed Jack Peterson to score and secure the victory.
The win earned the Vikings a berth into the tournament championship game.
Despite a superb pitching performance by Richmond, the Vikings fell in the tournament championship 2-1 to Patrick Henry. Richmond tossed six innings, allowing two runs on five hits.
“We played very well again today ” we just ran into a very good team and an excellent pitcher, and the breaks just didn’t fall our way today,” La Jolla head coach Gary Frank noted. “This was our first championship game of any kind since the City Conference tournament in 2001, but if we continue to play like we did these first three weeks, it won’t be our last championship game appearance this year.”
