La Jolla High girls third in track finals
The La Jolla High girls track team placed third in the CIF Division II Finals last Saturday, May 27.
Dana Hoolko qualified for the CIF state championships this Friday with a season-best of 11′ 8″ in the pole vault.
The 15-year-old school record in the 4×400 relay was broken by freshmen Nihal Kayali, Courtney Avvampato and Tess Plant-Thomas, and sophomore Simi Sharp. They ran 4:06.13. The old record was 4:08. The 17-year-old freshmen 800-meter record was broken by Thomas in 2:19.01.
A total of eight personal bests were posted, including: Alex Kearney (long jump), 1600; Kayali (100 and 200); Hoolko (3200); Margot Hedlin, and 4×100 relay of Ashley Fu, Sharp, Gina Schumacher and Hoolko.
YMCA hosts regatta
The Peninsula Family YMCA will be hosting its 23rd annual International Rowing and Paddling Regatta on Saturday, June 3. The event benefits Youth Swim programs at the Peninsula Family YMCA.
The event includes a 20-mile race from the San Diego Sailing Center in Santa Clara Point to Tidelands Park in Coronado and a 5-mile race from Sandy Beach in Shelter Island that also finishes in Tidelands Park.
A variety of watercraft is welcomed to enter, including outriggers, scramblers, kayaks, surfers, surf skis, surfboards, rowers, pedal-craft and paddleboards.
Immediately after the races there will be a lunch, raffle, silent auction, entertainment, water industry vendors and an awards ceremony for the winners.
Registration can be done on the day of event at the San Diego Sailing Center at Santa Clara Point.
Top squash players will compete here
The top six American male squash players will be in town this weekend to vie for the final spots on the U.S. Men’s National Squash Team, which will travel to Colombia this summer for the Pan American Federation Cup.
Team selection play will take place June 2-4, beginning at 5 p.m. Friday and ending at 3 p.m. Sunday, at San Diego Squash, 9370 Waples St., suite 101.
The competition is being held in conjunction with the amateur San Diego Squash Open and a round-robin event featuring four acclaimed international players, including Chris Walker and Stefan Castelyn. Admission is free for most matches. For information, call (858) 452-3616.
