Bishop’s School girls water polo wins 2-of-3 The Bishop’s School girls water polo tallied two out of three wins last week in consecutive days meeting Western League rivals. Bishop’s (11-4) opened the week with an 8-5 win over crosstown rival La Jolla High. Senior Sammi Peck led all scorers with four goals, while junior Claryann Olofsson-Loo chipped in two. A day later, Bishop’s traveled across the bridge to Coronado where the Lady Knights suffered a hard-fought loss to the Lady Islanders, 6-5. Freshman Jessica Webster led the Lady Knights with two goals, while sophomore Youth National Team goalie Gabby Stone had a career-high 20 saves. Bishop’s ended the week with a 12-3 victory over Cathedral Catholic, as seniors Melanie Boehrig (four) and Katy Feaver combined for seven goals. Five other girls scored one goal each including senior Julia Hill. LJCD football players honored La Jolla Country Day School senior linebacker Montell Allen and junior tight end Mical Bailey were recently selected to Max Prep’s All-California Small School Second-Team Football squad.  Allen led the Torreys with 124 tackles and was selected as the team’s and the Pacific League’s Defensive MVP. Allen also rushed for 1,166 yards and 14 touchdowns this past season.  Bailey led the Torreys in receiving with 34 receptions for 657 yards and 12 touchdowns, and was selected First-Team All-Pacific League Tight End. Bailey was second on the LJCD squad with 100 tackles and he racked up 8.5 sacks. He was honored as the Torrey’s Coaches Award winner for the 2009 season. LJCD booters split pair of games The La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School boys soccer team split a pair of games in action last week. In a 2-1 loss to rival Bishop’s School, Alistair Dobke converted a rebound off a hard shot by Dennis Roth for the team’s lone goal.  Although the entire Torrey team deserves credit for an excellent effort, Roth, Alex Fleischhacker and Philip Poyhonen had particularly strong games, according to LJCD head coach Jerry Fleischhacker. LJCD rebounded for a 4-2 victory over San Diego Jewish Academy. Trailing 1-0, LJCD came back largely in part due to the efforts of Lee Klitzner. The LJCDS sweeper moved to forward to start the half and quickly tallied twice, first on a direct kick and second off a perfect set-up by Roth.  Before 25 minutes were up in the second stanza, the Torreys scored two more times.  Klitzner, back on defense, played two great direct kicks into the penalty box, and they were converted by Alex Fleischhacker and Roth (his 11th goal of the season).
