Sluggers earn top league, team honors
A number of local baseball players earned honors recently for their efforts on the diamond this past spring.
In Coastal League action, La Jolla Country Day School placed a number of players on the first and second teams. They included: Mike McKenna, Kyle Reese and Greg Wisenberg (First-Team All-Coastal South). Wisenberg was also selected as the Coastal South pitcher of the year. Second-team honors went to Ben Sweeney, John Hansbrough and Derek Hatfield.
The Bishop’s School also had several players obtain honors. They were: Tim Costello, Nick Cox and Cade Sears (First-Team All-Coastal South) and Sam Brier (Second-Team All-Coastal South).
At La Jolla High, the Vikings recently honored their players with the annual teams awards.
They included: Trent Jemmett (MVP), Wyatt Hoff (Cy Young), Austin Miller (team captain), Stephen Foster (most improved), Peter Sefton and Robbie Beathard (coach’s award).
Western League honors went to the following: Sefton, Patrick Christensen (First-Team), Jemmett (Second-Team) and Christensen (pitcher of the year).
Wiggins and Lynx eclipsed by Sun
La Jolla Country Day alumnus Candice Wiggins scored 22 points, but it wasn’t quite enough, as the Minnesota Lynx suffered a tough 74-66 loss to the Connecticut Sun in a WNBA game at Minnesota on Tuesday, June 10.
After trailing 18-14 at the end of the first quarter, the Lynx went on a 23-10 run behind the play of Wiggins to go up by a score of 37-28 at halftime.
“We calmed down, called a timeout and settled down,” Wiggins said. “Then, we really picked up our play on the defensive end of the floor. So, we brought a lot of energy and just capitalized on their mistakes.”
Although she accounted for 5 of Minnesota’s 14 third-quarter points after the intermission, Wiggins and her teammates watched as Connecticut cut the gap to 51-48 at the end of the third period.
In the fourth quarter, it was more of the same as Wiggins tickled the twine by totaling 10 of her team’s 15 tallies.
Unfortunately for the Lynx, though, on the final scoreboard, they would come up just short.
