The La Jolla Nomads Girls Under-13 soccer team played in the semifinals of the Cal South tournament Feb. 23 in Lancaster, beating seven teams over three weekends of bracket play.
The Nomads then met Rancho Cucamonga’s Arsenal FC’s in the semi and lost, but were still the top San Diego team in the tourney.

LJCD booters fall in regionals
The La Jolla Country Day School boys soccer team saw its fantastic season end last week in the Division III Southern California Regionals in a 2-1 loss to L.A. Salesiam.
Zach Wolfenzon scored LJCD’s lone goal, his 31st of the season.

Vikings, Knights see baseball action
A pair of local scholastic baseball teams saw action over the last week.
La Jolla High has opened the season at 3-0-1. The Vikings started play with a 5-4 (nine innings) win over Coronado. Zac Smith tripled home Jimmy Filter with the go-ahead run in extra innings, and Patrick Christensen pitched five innings of one-hit relief while striking out nine to earn the victory.
Robbie Beathard punched a single past a drawn-in infield for a walk-off single and a 1-0 victory over Orange Glen. Sophomore Max Strohl pitched five scoreless innings in his varsity debut, and Julian Velazco picked up the win in relief. Smith had two more hits to lead the Vikes on offense.
After playing San Ysidro to a 1-1 tie, La Jolla finished off the week with a 2-1 win over El Camino.
Peter Sefton broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning with an RBI single. He then came around to score the second and deciding run. Christensen went the distance, striking out eight and allowing only one unearned run.
“It’s been a great start for us,” La Jolla High head coach Gary Frank said. “Our pitching and defense have been outstanding.”
At The Bishop’s School, the Knights went 2-1 in action last week.
